Really like the bass on this one

The triangle wave moves around here in pretty pleasing ways, and the chord changes are unexpected but not entirely unwelcome.

An interesting way to set the pace for the rest of the game, to be sure, but I think it more than does its job- it sounds fun.

Calamaistr responds:

Its a bit 'humorous' as youll encounter plenty a 'ratty' on your first adventure, as its the sewers.
Thats what the first melody has to personify anyway, as a 'oh god thats alot of rats'
2ndself didnt want it to be cutesy but 'aggressive' but i personally like to think of that first part of my way of saying 'its still a little cutesy!!' :þ

The rest of it is a continuation of some familiar (through the rest of the game) tunes in that aggressive manner.

pretty interesting

sometimes I have a hard time believing you keep things to just four tracks at a time, considering how much is going on in these songs.

Nice use of white noise and whatnot to create a very frenzied atmosphere- again I point out that there is a lot going on in this song that perhaps a casual listener might not pick up at first glance.

Though there really is no melody to speak, things always keep moving which I think is always important in a boss song.

Good job.

Calamaistr responds:

Yea its supposed to be chaotic and pushy, keep the player busy, the melody is very chipped up purposely, youll recognice it before during play anyway. You 'should listen to level 3 and the ending imo, im curious as to see what you think of those.

Excellent rendition

The constant string riff in the background at the beginning gives the piece a very foresty vibe to it; this is good, because Saria's song is obviously THE forest song of OoT.
Same thing with the flute (?) riff towards the end... Good stuff, good stuff!

The little additions you've added are all great touches and this is very fun to listen.
My ONLY advice is when you have a lot of instruments going on at once, it gets hard to distinguish things. Keep in mind for future compositions how to keep things nice and crystal clear. This is not much of a problem, but only shows up for a few parts during the song.

Anyway, this really shines with quality.

ChaosDragon004 responds:

Yeah, I do have work in that area and I think with more patience I could fix that. thanks again Charlemagne for your honest words.

Very enjoyable

On a tech side of things, when the real beat comes in, I think you could tweak the drums to give them a little bit more oomph: they sound a bit shallow as they are now.

Still, I really liked the composition as well the sounds you use (the choir sounds great!), and this is a really good piece in my book!

ChaosDragon004 responds:

If it's coming from you Charlemagne then Im truely thankful! Imake sure to look out for the drums next time. Thanks again bro, stay in touch!

needs polish

Here are my tips for the vocals:

-train your voice to hold out a note for a bit longer. Any longer than a few beats, it goes all over the place pitch-wise.
-the back up singer needs to stay on harmony. This takes a lot of practice, but I can't recommend it enough.

I'd also make the drums sound a little more full and louder, but at the same time not let the guitars drown out the voice. Halfway through it was getting pretty hard to hear any of the lyrics.

This is alright, but it's not quite there yet. Keep on working on it!

Pure-Metal-UTA responds:

Just the kind of review I'm looking for!
I could change the settings on EZDrummer to dry for the drums to make it sounds more full, and probably the only way to prevent the guitars from drowning out the vocals would be to continue practicing singing and get it right, that way simply singing should be loud enough to keep the level above the guitars.
Backup singer was me. I didn't listen to the song enough to get a good grip on the harmonies so I improvised, and that's why they're off.
And in order to hold the note longer, especially the high and low notes, just keep singing at that pitch and I'll get it?
Thanks for the useful tips!

interesting melding

certainly never heard of a Kirby Hearts song before. Hearing it... it DOES kinda work.

This is a really solid and fun-to-listen-to track. I listened to it a good few times on loop. The sounds are pretty good and the arrangement is pretty nice.

good job!

Winterchaos responds:

I'm glad you liked the song!

It does its job

I mean, of course it's not the next big thing in the world of chiptune, but it doesn't grate the ears and it doesn't sound bad.

I like the higher wave synths you have doing that constant chromatic drop; by itself it's nothing special, but it sounds better because of the wave (triangle?) you chose to do it.

Not bad at all; keep up the good work!

Winterchaos responds:

I appreciate your honesty! This was a tune that I made in about an hour with Musescore (it isn't very friendly to use, but it is free) so I agree with your comment about it not being the next best thing. However, using a free software I felt that I did a fairly decent job on this song. Thanks for the review!!!

Minimal and cool

Goes to show that you don't need to have a lot going on to achieve a mood.

The piece seems effortless; as if it flows from itself (like water in a way). The very far-off-sounding instruments give a lot of mellow, great ambiance to the piece and works very much in its favor.

Everything is panned well and unobtrusive... The only thing I can fault you for is that it ends kinda abrubpty. When it loops back, it's kinda jarring. I know this is not a loop, but I thnk you could have drawn out and faded out the ending a little bit more to give a natural finish to a very natural song.

Still a very solid effort though.

TreborLocke responds:

I'll go ahead and add in a fade. I keep meaning to do it, I'm just lazy I guess to that extent. Glad you like it.

listened to this about 9 times in a row

And you get 9 stars out of 10, lol

Anyway, this was a really well-made track; to say I liked it a lot would be saying too little.
Things flow smoothly, and everything feels organic and natural, which is no easy feat when dealing with retro songs. However, from hearing your early stuff up till now, I can safely say that you definitely do know what you are doing.

The way the tones shift around effortlessly along a simplistic groove makes me dig this very much... It reminds me a lot of Cave Story's excellent OST. And it loops really well too.

I gotta hand it to ya, this one is pretty great and i liked it a whole lot.

Calamaistr responds:

Thanks man! apreciate it. :)
Will be making alot more retro music from now on for some time. :)

I listened to this track all night yesterday btw, after i uploaded it :þ

Solid

The ending is indeed a little abrupt, but I am sure the guy you made this for will put this to good use.

I too liked it when the guitar came in; who doesn't like a nice mixture of orchestral and pop every now and then, eh?
I can't imagine what this would be used for, but I can imagine that whatever it is will be much the better for using an all-around good track like this.

sorohanro responds:

Well, had to fit it to the animation :D
