Everything that needed to be fixed was fixed...

and more so. I am sure you had a WIP track of this song released not too long ago. If so, you perfected this song, if not, well, my bad, I thought you did.

In any event this song was pretty damn great. Still loved the intro, and the drums work perfectly. At 4:50, when that guitar part starts up, it reminded me of Castlevania, which usually means awesome music. This does not disappoint. I loved the outro as well.

Truly great stuff.

Metaljonus responds:

Yeah I posted it and then took it down when I finished it. Thanks for listening!

Very good!

Some helpful reminders:

-Be mindful of how high instruments can go, so everything sounds as natural as possible. I am almost positive that strings do not reach the registers you have them reach.
-Make sure your musical language is clear as possible... some parts in this song sound 'muddy', if you will... This happens when there are a lot of instruments going on at once, most notably at 2:30ish

Now, for the positives!

This was pretty damn good, and I like it a whole lot! The melody and the various variations of the themes were pretty good. You have a knack for instrumentation, and the different orchestral parts work well together, aside from the few issues I mentioned previously.
This work is rather 'professional' and 'Hollywood,' if I say so myself. Take that as you will, but in this particular instance, I mean that as quite the compliment. This is a nice project with good scoring behind it, and I encourage you to continue to produce good work.

Setu-Firestorm responds:

To address your pointers: 1) I have heard strings reach that high; it's just that it sounds better when real strings do it, and not a set of synth strings like what I was using, and 2) the muddiness is not a matter of instrumentation. In fact, the only error I made (and was later pointed out to me) was having one too many violin parts (normally they are split in two, and at the time I composed this piece, I did not know that). The muddiness problem has to do with the way it was mixed: a full orchestra with a bit too-saturated reverb, and a compressor to cap off the volume output at 0.00db without clipping. Both of those working together are what created that effect, and as with any new composing exercise, I learn and try different things each time in order to improve on the last time.

Other than that, your input is greatly appreciated, and I'm glad you liked it.

Wouldn't have minded a longer version

Simplistic and clean... Precise in its language and nice in its tone and color.

I like these samples a whole lot, they are pretty damn good, and it really adds to the authenticity and delightfulness of the song.

For the sparseness of the notes, I find this quite rich. Though as I mentioned, I could have listened to a longer version of this song.

In any event, good job!

loansindi responds:

Thanks for the review!

The samples are garritan, which seem to be fairly strong on strings and woodwinds.

I really enjoy focusing on simple instrumentation.

I'm working up towards longer compositions.

Cooleo von schooleo, bro

Well put together, liked the voice samples, and the synth work towards the latter half.

All in all, this was pretty enjoyable. I wouldn't quite say you got the synths to sound orchestral (far from it), but I liked it all the same. I liked how the instrumentation worked with one another to create the cool effect of the song.

Has a nice technical shine to it, and in short, it's fun. Good job.

Centrist responds:

Ah, thankyah. I did what I could with what I had. :]

Oooh, avant-garde....

You seem to know your way around musique concrete, etc etc etc... Tell me, you ever listen to say, Stockhausen or Boulez?

I get a vibe of the former with this piece.

All in all, this is not nice on the ears, and it never tries to be. It is true to itself, in all of its random unhinged glory.

Not huge on the stock FL vocoder stuff, though that was really only towards the end.

Still, this was a pretty damn fine piece.

Awesome!

This is one of the more original songs i have heard on the AP in quite a while! You were right when you said you were looking to put original stuff onto the AP.

The dissonance, the off-kilter beat, the instrumentation... all of these mesh together to create a singular experience that is exhilarating. On a technical level, this is all so well-produced that I am honestly impressed. The people who doubtless have voted countless 0s were obviously looking for something more conventional; they won't find that here. Instead, you have something that is rather original and impeccably excellent.

Keep up the excellent work!

Nice and mellow

I always have a soft spot for tracks like this... Must be my long love of the game Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening...

Anyways, the piano work was very good, liked the noises you added in here to add to the feel...

The song is just in general very well put-together, and I like that a whole lot. It's not trying to be something groundbreaking, but it's trying to be nice and thoughtful, and in that respect, it succeeds.

Keep up the stellar work.

Liked the intro a whole lot

I really liked the dissonant sounds in this one. The off-key notes give a song a flavor in my opinion, and I always like seeing more mainstream songs adopt that approach.

I don't know any song this could be based off (this genre is not my expertise), but hey, this is pretty good!

This song is original and better than most DnB songs I happen to listen around here. Because there is a flair of originality and some creative things going on here that I happen to think add a whole lot to the song. The key changes further cement this as a highly enjoyable and original work. Then the strings come in and I am completely sold.

The more I listen to the song, the more I like it, and I think ya did a real bang-up job. Keep those creative juices fresh, and keep up the good work!

julius33 responds:

Ty for you opinion ^^ Im so happy now :P
And also you can say this is more of Tranc(e)y DnB

Groovy!

I think the only things I would change in this piece are:

-Make the bass have a more... I dunno plucked feel. The fretless doesn't work as well as would a different type of bass
-A little better soundfont for the drums... they sound a bit too poppy and such... At least the snare and hi-hat does. The other parts sound great, though. A few filters here and there solve this problem
-PLEASE MAKE THE VIBRAPHONE COME IN EARLIER!!!

Pieces like this are always nice for a listen. I think the main thing that would have been good in my eyes was to make the Vibraphone come in earlier, giving for more complex workings as the song progressed. As it stands, this is a really cool song, but the main thing is to not skimp on instrumentation of all your ensemble.

Overall, very great work.

Stylistically stunning and beautiful.

I wish I had the resources you worked with, because you are quite capable of creating works of supreme beauty. From the opening glissando I was hooked on your imaginative and chilling soundscape.

The choral work I loved, really infusing the piece with such an understated energy that continued to build for the rest of the piece until it finally boils up to the surface. Well done, well done. I do not mean to say that all energy needs to be fast-paced, but the energy here is much more subtle, and since I still feel it from such understatement, that is the mark of true craft.

In short, this is damn great. I wish it were longer, so I could listen to more of it. But alas, it be the nature of dreams to end.
