What does it mean to experiment?

Is it to experiment only with new sounds?
New rhythms?
New harmonies?
New motifs and ideas?
Do what ya usually do, just call it something else?
Put a fancy title next to your song?
Try to do something that hasn't been done before?
Try to do something that has been done but do it better?
Try to be unconventional?
Try to be reactionary?
Try to be revolutionary? Evolutionary?
Doing your best on accident?
Doing your worst on purpose?
Just to see what happens?

Experimentation, for me, is mostly attempting a new technique.

Good answer.
But can one experiment with old techniques?

more or less all of those, creating somthing new using skills you've obtained through past experimentation, using your own creativity to try create somthing new and unheard of, or creating your own take of somthing old but adding yourself to it creativly.. its hard to explain but yeah thats the main jist =) think it applies to all creative endevours tho =)

I think ye hit the nail on the head.

how to experiment with music:
you must pick a theme. these are very vague, so it wont hinder your experiment.
next you just play around with stuff untiil you get an idea, or inspiration, then mix it up and boom, you've got a new type of song.
